How to Apply for Open Football Trials in the UK -
Football is a beloved sport in the UK, and many aspiring players dream of making it to the professional level. Open football trials offer a fantastic opportunity to showcase your talent and potentially secure a spot in a club's academy or team. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to apply for open football trials in the UK.
1. Research Clubs and Trial Dates
Start by researching clubs that hold open trials. Many professional and semi-professional clubs in the UK offer these opportunities. Check their official websites, social media pages, and local sports news for announcements about upcoming trials. Some popular clubs that frequently hold trials include:
- Premier League Clubs:
- Championship Clubs:
- Lower League Clubs:
2. Understand the Requirements
Each club may have specific requirements for their trials. These can include age restrictions, skill levels, and sometimes even residency criteria. Make sure you meet these requirements before applying. Common requirements might include:
- Age groups (e.g., U12, U16, U18)
- Proof of identity and age
- Previous playing experience or club affiliation
3. Prepare Your Application
Most clubs will require you to fill out an application form. This can usually be found on their official website. The application form will typically ask for:
- Personal Information: Name, date of birth, contact details
- Football Experience: Previous clubs, positions played, achievements
- Medical Information: Any relevant medical conditions or injuries
Ensure that all information is accurate and up-to-date. Some clubs may also ask for a short video showcasing your skills, so be prepared to provide this if requested.
4. Submit Your Application
Once your application is complete, submit it according to the club’s instructions. This might be via an online form, email, or postal mail. Make sure to adhere to any deadlines provided by the club.
5. Prepare for the Trial
If your application is successful, you will receive an invitation to attend the trial. Here are some tips to help you prepare:
- Fitness: Ensure you are in peak physical condition. Regular training, proper diet, and adequate rest are crucial.
- Skills: Focus on honing your football skills, particularly in the position you are applying for.
- Equipment: Make sure you have the appropriate gear, including boots, shin pads, and training kit.
6. Attend the Trial
On the day of the trial, arrive early to give yourself plenty of time to warm up and get settled. Be confident, but also be a team player. Coaches look for players who not only have individual talent but also work well within a team.
7. Follow Up
After the trial, it’s a good idea to follow up with the club to thank them for the opportunity and express your continued interest. This can leave a positive impression and keep you on their radar for future opportunities.
Conclusion
Applying for open football trials in the UK requires research, preparation, and dedication. By following these steps, you can increase your chances of making a positive impression and potentially securing a spot in a football club. Remember, persistence is key, and every trial is a valuable learning experience. Good luck!

Club Football Philosophy
Everton Football Club’s football philosophy is based around our long standing motto “Nil Satis Nisi Optimum” which translates into “Nothing but the best is good enough”.
It is an ethos that is followed diligently by every single player and member of staff. Everybody is valued and everybody makes a contribution. This is a belief that is in-line with the “spirit” associated with the City of Liverpool.
The ultimate aim is for the 1st team to win football matches, ideally through entertaining and attacking football, whilst always giving 100% effort and determination.
Everton is a coaching club. It provides everybody with the opportunity to develop as players, coaches and people. Whether recruited from other clubs or developed through our own Academy, all are given a platform to succeed through high quality, extensive football coaching, physical development and performance education programmes.
All players are given every encouragement to improve and develop as footballers and young men. The Club has a proven track record of identifying and producing some of the game’s finest football talent. A key element of this success is our “one club approach”. This requires the 1st team and Academy to maintain a strong and supportive working relationship at all times.
Over the years, the Club has been referred to as “The School of Science”. We are very proud of this reputation and we regularly embrace new and fresh ideas whilst remaining grounded and respectful of the Club’s magnificent history, tradition and standing.
Academy Football Philosophy
We will endeavour to produce young players with the skills, qualities and attributes needed to play professional football at the highest level through the delivery of high quality coaching and an elite player development programme.
We will strive to develop balanced young people by teaching, instilling and up-holding the Club’s vision, values and football philosophy.
We will always attempt to put the development of individuals before the results of teams.
All Academy departments will work together to support the needs of all our players with the common goal of creating a pathway from the Academy to the 1st team.
We will encourage our players to play creative, attacking football with a winning mentality. This is part of our Coaching Philosophy.
We will try to control the game by dominating possession. Our aim is to play out from the back and through midfield. To enable us to do this we must spread out and make the pitch as big as possible. Our players must look to play forward whenever possible and we must not miss a chance to turn, penetrate, or shoot. Our Club has a tradition of getting crosses into the box, but we must also teach our players to attack through the 18 yard line by playing clever, creative and inventive football.
Out of possession all players must have the mentality to defend. They must know their defensive roles and responsibilities and they must be difficult to beat in 1v1 situations.
Our teams must look to press whenever possible but if we cannot press we must be compact and patient. From this position we must look for opportunities to press.
Structure
We have six departments within the Academy, operating within a multi-disciplinary framework:
- Technical (Coaching)
- Talent Identification and Recruitment (Scouting)
- Medical (Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation)
- Sport Science (Psychology, Strength & Conditioning and Performance Analysis)
- Education and Welfare (Schools Liaison, Formal Education Delivery and Personal Development Programmes)
- Operations (Administration and Facilities Management)
Each department is fully staffed with highly qualified and experienced individuals who work closely together developing personalised, integrated programmes for all players.
Our methods follow this simple structure:
- Identification - Our scouts attend matches throughout this country and abroad.
- Recruitment - We sign players with real potential.
- Development - We place players with qualified staff best equipped to meet the needs of each individual player.
- Resourcing - We make the best use of our well-equipped training facilities.
- Maximising - We offer players the best individual development programme allowing them to achieve their full potential by focusing on their educational, social, psychological and technical development.
The Four Corners of Elite Player Development
Once a young player has been identified, recruited and registered, he enters our performance programme, which is at the heart of the overall Academy operation and at the forefront of elite young player development.
The programme is committed to enabling each player to fulfil his potential. In order to achieve this, the programme operates in an environment that is conducive to individual and team progress.
Technical and tactical
5-11 - Players master the basic skills and techniques of the game. At this stage, they fall in love with the game and are already playing their first matches in the famous blue and white as they develop in 1v1 to 8v8 situations.
12-16 - Whilst carrying on technical and skill work the emphasis switches to problem solving. At the end of this stage players will have an understanding of one or more positions in the 11v11 game.
17-18 - Players' techniques, skills and game understanding are fine-tuned on a day-to-day basis. Winning becomes increasingly important and players must learn the ways of professional football. It is possible to be selected for the first team at this stage!
Physical
We live in the age of the super-fit athlete and footballers are no different. Our young players learn the importance of strength, speed, flexibility, agility and conditioning and have individual programmes in order to improve each specific physical area.
Lifestyle
Experience has taught us that many talented youngsters fail to reach their potential due to a lack of understanding of certain issues within their individual environment. Players are given guidance on areas such as diet and nutrition, alcohol, time management, gambling, bullying, dealing with the media and many other challenges faced by young people. Parents are invited to join in such sessions and are given specific advice on how to support their son through his development programme.
Psychological
Football at the highest level demands incredible mental and emotional strength and resilience. We focus on the key areas of goal-setting, motivation, self-confidence, concentration and communication with all our players through a rigorous review and reflection process. Additional targeted support is available where necessary in this area.
The development and acquisition of psychological skills enable our players to improve their performance and to fulfil their potential.

TESTIMONIALS
"Everton is recognised, indeed, renowned, throughout world football as a Club which is not only steeped in history but as one which is a centre of sporting excellence for the aspiring young players of tomorrow. Whilst this reputation is well-deserved, it would not have been earned without the determination, dedication and professionalism of those within our Academy. We have always given our total, unswerving support to Everton Football Club's Academy and we shall continue to do so." - Bill Kenwright, Everton chairman
“The value of a successful youth academy cannot be underestimated. The capacity to provide any manager with players capable of playing at the highest level, in the most demanding league in the world, is essential to the continued growth and development of a leading football club. It is something Everton has been able to do successfully on a sustained basis and I know that our track record is looked upon with envy across the Premier League.” - Robert Elstone, Everton chief executive officer

JOBS AT EVERTON FC

If you are looking for a career in football, and live in the Everton catchment, then your best chance will be to join Everton FC Academy.
About Everton FC Academy
Everton Academy offer an advanced football development and education programme supported by expert and dedicated staff. Everton FC Academy is located at: Finch Farm, Finch Lane, Halewood, Liverpool, Merseyside L26 3UE
Everton FC Academy use advanced technology and coaching methods to develop their players. They are actively looking for upcoming talent to join their academy, and are very selective about who gets in, as competition is tough.
With the changes that have taken place in the football academy system. Academy Category one clubs are now free (U12+) to recruit from all over the nation.
Previously, Category one clubs could only recruit talent within a 90 minute travelling time to the academy, but the FA have reconsidered this following thinking that the best talent should only fairly be allowed to play in the best academies even if they do not live nearby. This gives the very best talent the very best chances of success, thus growing our home grown talent for the international stage.
This has seen a rise in host families being recruited at Everton FC Academy, to help house young promising talent in safe family environments.
Upcoming Fixtures at Everton FC Academy
Everton Academy has a whole programme of upcoming activities, fixtures and events. Check the times of each match or look up the match venue for any of the Everton Academy.
How to get a trial at Everton FC Academy
You must be selected to have a trial at Everton Academy, so it is important that players are spotted in the right places at the right times. For some players, they prefer a direct approach sending in links to videos of themselves playing football, but it is worth bearing in mind that clubs receive thousands of these videos each week and simply don’t have time to watch them all and go about their daily business, so the most effective way of getting scouted for a trial at Everton FC Academy is to join a Everton Soccer School Scouts regularly select young players from soccer school sessions and invite them to trial at the development centres for Reading FC, and anyone can play in their soccer schools so it offers an open door for all to get spotted.
It is also particularly good planning to take your child to soccer schools as soon as they are old enough, as their competition will be doing the same, so it enables them to develop their talents in line with the same level as their peers.
How to get scouted by a Everton FC Academy scout
Everton Academy scouts offer players the chance to trial. Many players are lucky enough to find themselves in the right places when scouts are watching games, but Everton are also very aware that good talent can slip through the net, so do offer players the chances to directly contact them with the below details.
Understandably they are unable to respond to everybody due to the volume of applications, but this does serve as an effective way to alert scouts about talent looking to take their football to the next level and secure a trial for Everton FC Academy.
